The article analyses aspects of the medieval monastic education in the XI^th century and the doubts raised by the teachers of that time about the use of texts from the pagan classical literature. As base for our analysis, we took the moralizing testimony of benedictine abbot Guibert of Nogent (c.1055-1125).

This paper presents a brief historical context of the effervescent 13th century of the Medieval West and the importance of the Order of Preachers in urban renewal and in the consolidation of Christian thought in the newly founded universities.
